Committing to Sustainable Practices

This month, the West Side Neighborhood Housing Services Board of Directors passed a resolution committing the organization to sustainability in our operations and programs.

We'll be continually improving our operations and services to make them more sustainable. Here are some of the things we've already accomplished toward sustainability.

Green, Flexible Hours: Through the West Side & Black Rock-Riverside NHS partnership, we changed our hours to accomodate clients and save energy. West Side NHS is open Monday-Thursday, 8 to 6, and Black Rock-Riverside NHS is open Tuesday-Friday, 8 to 6. This has given the people in our communites 10 additional hours per week to access our services, and it's saved us more than $3,000 per year in energy costs.

Adopting Green Purchasing Policies: Both the West Side NHS and Black Rock-Riverside NHS offices have adopted green purchasing policies that eliminate unsustainable products, such as synthetic air fresheners, and use Sustainable Forest Initiative and recycled paper products. We have also replaced all office lightbulbs with CFLs and we're replacing disposable kitchenware with washable, reusable products.

Using Green Rehab Specs on 100% of Home Improvement Projects: Through our services, we assist or fund the rehabilitation of over 75 housing units per year. Our Construction Analysts refer to green rehab specs for all of those projects. In addition, our Home Improvement Loan can be used to match the NYSERDA $5,000 grant for energy improvements, and can cover things like energy-efficient windows and doors that are not covered by that grant.

Educating Homeowners in Green Topics: We're enhancing our homebuyer education coverage of energy-saving, water-saving, and healthy home environment techniques so that homebuyers can save money, protect their home investment and keep their families healthy.

Encouraging Green Commuting and Sustainable Transportation: We're holding office competitions for the most green miles commuted, installing bike racks, and finding ways to reduce our carbon footprint in travel.

On our website, we'll be using the symbol to the right  to highlight green topics and options in our program areas. Keep an eye out for it!

New Farmers' Market at Riverside Park

Photo by Cleber MoriThis summer, we are pleased to announce a brand new farmers market in Riverside Park! The Riverside Farmers' Market will run every Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon, from July 14 to September 29.

Riverside Park was originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and is now one of Buffalo’s most vibrant outdoor areas. We aim to ensure that this market becomes a sustainable source of healthy, local food that will be a strong contributor to the social and economic vitality of our neighborhood.

The idea for a farmers' market came directly from the community itself. Several residents expressed frustration with the lack of food options, and requested a farmers' market throughout the summer months. After consultation with Councilmember Joseph Golombek,  we knew that by providing a needed service to the area, this market aligns with our commitment to neighborhood stability, local businesses, and positive community engagement. A farmers' market is the perfect venue for the kind of social and economic participation that helps neighborhoods come together and thrive.

Come see the market for yourself, and join us on July 14th for our opening day! Whether you are looking for fresh cut flowers, ripe strawberries, or simply some good conversation, we will have something for everyone. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to give us a call at (716) 877-3910. You can also find updates on our Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/pages/Riverside-Farmers-Market.

Below is our calendar of events. Take special note of our Craft Fair days, when local artists and artisans will sell a variety of jewelry, home goods, and gifts. We look forward to seeing you there!
