Project Reinvest: Homeownership will make the American Dream more affordable in Western New York

Project Reinvest: Homeownership will make $1.2 million available to homebuyers in Monroe and Erie County, providing down payment assistance for the purchase of first homes. The funds were awarded to NeighborWorks Rochester, a Community Development Financial Institution, to be executed in partnership with West Side Neighborhood Housing Services in Buffalo, NY.

Eligible homebuyers can receive $10,500 in down payment assistance for the purchase of their first homes in target areas of Monroe or Erie County.

“We are excited to be able to offer this down payment assistance in partnership with West Side Neighborhood Housing Services,” said Joanne Panarisi-Bottone, Executive Director of NeighborWorks Rochester.  “The cities of Buffalo and Rochester face challenges of low average incomes and weaker housing markets, and these funds will help homebuyers to achieve more equity in their home purchase.”

“For people whose American dream of owning their own home might have been just out of reach, Project Reinvest Homeownership will give them the opportunity to build wealth and a brighter future,” said Ed Jackson, Executive Director of West Side NHS.

Project Reinvest: Homeownership is a 0% interest deferred grant. Homebuyers may qualify if they make at or below 100% of the Area Median Income for their county and if they are purchasing in a CDFI investment area.

Interested homebuyers should contact the lender of their choice for more information or to start an application. See below for a list of area partners:

WELCOMING NEW LEADERSHIP

West Side Neighborhood Housing Services and Black Rock-Riverside Neighborhood Housing Services are pleased to announce the appointment of Edwin Jackson, Jr. as Executive Director. Mr. Jackson brings many years of experience in housing finance, community development, and leadership to the Executive Director position at the two organizations, who share staff and programs to provide safe, affordable and sustainable housing opportunities.

Mr. Jackson moves to this position from his role as Collections and Loan Portfolio Manager at West Side & Black Rock-Riverside NHS, where he managed more than $5.1 million in organization assets. Please help support those in need

So often tragedy strikes when we least expect it. One minute you’re watching “Home Alone” curled up on the couch with your family, the next you’re standing in the middle of a snowy street watching the life you once knew fading away.

Early the morning of December 12th a fire destroyed the house located directly behind rental property owned by Black Rock-Riverside NHS. Fire detectors gave early warnings and thankfully our tenants escaped unharmed. Although the blaze has caused considerable damage, forcing those families to relocate, we’re grateful no lives were lost. Many thanks go out to the Buffalo Fire Department for their rapid response and containment of the blaze.

The holidays have always put a focus on our relationship to others, not only a gratefulness for those close to us, but an appreciation for those we don’t know. There are currently two online fundraisers dedicated to helping those displaced get back on their feet again. You can visit this link to contribute to the Rathburn Conrad family and you visit this link to raise funds for our elderly tenant, Ms. Jolan Ujj.

There are many causes worthy of your contribution this season. We hope you’ll find it within your means to contribute to these families in need.

Also, please note, Black Rock-Riverside NHS has closed its office at 203 Military Road due to the damage from the fire. The organization will continue offering housing assistance at the office of its partner agency, West Side NHS, at 359 Connecticut Street. Black Rock-Riverside NHS staff will work out of the West Side NHS office until the building at 203 Military Road is able to open, otherwise all services will continue uninterrupted.

Beginning Tuesday, December 13, Black Rock-Riverside NHS clients and residents seeking services may contact Black Rock-Riverside NHS staff at:
